“Help me!” George gasped, reaching forward and grabbing the root of a tree, then tensing for a moment before pulling himself forward a few more precious inches. “Somebody...”

Barely able to raise his voice above a pained gasp, he stopped and looked around. Ever since he'd dragged his ailing body out of Hadlow House, somehow escaping from the dreadful woman who'd captured him, he'd been trying to find safety. He'd taken to hauling himself across the forest floor using his one good arm; the other arm had long since become too numb to use, thanks mainly to the candlestick that remained lodged in his shoulder. Having tried to remove the candlestick at one point, he'd found that any movement at all caused much blood to gush from the wound, so he'd left it in place for now while he desperately tried to reach safety.

“Help me,” he whimpered, even though he knew most likely there was nobody nearby to hear him. He hadn't even managed to keep track of which way he'd gone after leaving the house. “Please...”

Somehow he'd managed to drag himself up the stairs and into the hallway of Hadlow House, and then over to the front door, which had mercifully been left open. He had no idea how he'd been able to escape, and he'd expected the horrific woman to grab him at any moment, but he could only reason that she must have been suddenly distracted as he'd made his bid for freedom. In the time she'd kept him as a prisoner in the basement, she'd cut off several large chunks of meat and muscle from his body, and this had left him feeling terribly weak, but the need to survive kept him going.

He knew, however, that he would die soon if he couldn't find help.

Taking hold of another root, he braced himself for the pain that would inevitably follow. He clenched his teeth, and then he hauled himself past the root, only to find that he was at the top of a gentle slope. He hesitated, wondering whether he should turn back, but he realized after a few seconds that there appeared to be a road at the slope's bottom. Unable to help himself, he leaned forward and rolled down, letting out a series of pained gasps as his battered and bloodied body hit several thick obstacles on the way, until finally he rolled out onto the road and came to a stop with one final gasp.

Once he'd managed to summon a little more strength, he looked both ways along the road. The stretch seemed vaguely familiar, as if perhaps it was the route from the village to that infernal house, and after a few seconds he spotted the spire of a church. Realizing that this must be the way to Cobblefield, he briefly considered trying to get help in the village, but he knew there would be too many questions. His best bet, he supposed, was to find some way to get far away from the area, and he told himself that he could probably just about ride a horse.
